What is IV infusion and what are the types of IV infusion?

If you follow certain celebrities online or if you like to keep up to date with the treatments on offer for your health and beauty then you have probably heard of IV infusions. This treatment is a favorite in Hollywood and on social media so here is everything you need to know about IV infusion before you give it a try. What is IV infusion?

IV infusion is a treatment that is delivered intravenously. Nutrients and hydration is delivered to your body through your bloodstream and the body absorbs and uses them immediately. The absorption rate increases from a maximum of 50% when vitamins and nutrients are taken orally to 100% when used in IV therapy.

Conditions that affect the body and mind such as depression and anxiety are very common in our society so it is no surprise that people need a boost now more than ever. IV treatments can give both your energy levels and immune system a boost. We have mentioned that is a popular treatment in celebrity circles but versions of IV infusion therapies started centuries ago.

What types are available?

There are two types of IV infusion therapy and these are an IV drip and an IV push. There are differences to both treatments but the main thing to consider when choosing which one is how long you need the treatment to last and the amount of fluid you need.

IV Push – The push treatment will begin with a plastic catheter being inserted into the vein on your arm. Then the treatment is slowly pressed into the vein and up to 60 ml can be inserted over around 20 minutes. A specialist is there all the time during the treatment to push the fluid.

IV Drip - For this type of treatment a catheter will be inserted into your vein like it is with the IV Push. It is inserted with a needle that will be swiftly removed once the tube is in the vein. Then the treatment will slowly infuse. During a drip treatment, a minimum of 250 ml and a maximum of 1000 ml will be released over around 45-60 minutes. You don’t have to sit completely still for the whole time you can use your arms for using the phone, reading a magazine, etc.

The treatments are safe but you can ask your doctor about whether it will affect any medical conditions you have. You must go to a professional for this so the correct amount of fluid is used and because the skin will be punctured during the procedure.

What vitamins can be used in IV infusion?

All different types of vitamins can be used and some of the most common are magnesium, zinc, calcium, and vitamins B and C. You can choose just one vitamin or have a mix. Antioxidants and different amino acids can also be used, it depends on what you want the treatment to do. For example, if you wanted to give your immune a boost you may choose a treatment that includes vitamins C and B and magnesium. Different places offer different vitamin mixes so think about what you need and choose a package accordingly.
